When 64-year-old Ron Swan was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of months ago, the Portland State chapter of Phi Delta Theta rallied around Swan and decided the best way to help their ailing friend was to … grow mustaches.



After Swan's diagnosis, fraternity President Dalton Higginbottom did some research and found "Movember," an international event that turns November into a month-long mustache growing contest designed to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer.

Trees fell for Commons addition

During fall break, four trees were removed near the Commons, prompting the College Ecology Club to speak out against the lack of communication between the University and students about the removal.

Portland State's sustainability department is applying for a $10,000 grant that could result in cleaner water across campus.



Liz Simmons, an urban studies graduate student at Portland State, is spearheading one of many new sustainability projects on campus, called the Take Back the Tap campaign, inspired by a national campaign of the same name. The campaign aims to reduce the amount of bottled water purchased and consumed at PSU, also a goal of sustainability. Her campaign is working alongside the sustainability office's grant proposal.

What was supposed to be a celebration of the University of Portland has prompted some students to question the value of building a 90-foot bell tower on campus.

Much of the negative response to the bell tower stems from confusion over the funding source and whether the construction will take money away from what students think is more vital to their education.
