Tanya Knight is the student speaker for the 2009 graduation ceremony.
She is graduating in the first Bachelor of Applied Science class with a 3.92 GPA.
But this is not her first degree from Peninsula College. Six years ago Knight received an Associate of Applied Science degree from PC and then was hired by the college in the Internet and Technology Department. Knight also started teaches IT classes.
In addition to teaching IT at the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center and PC, she was a mother of five still raising the last of her children. Knight said the BAS program is perfect, because she didn't have to leave Port Angeles.
The BAS program affected her life fundamentally. Knight became confident and formed friendships she said will last a long time. But it wasn't all smooth for her. Knight said she "went through some growing pains."
Knight said she wants to eventually teach emergency management at PC. She was motivated by her internship in emergency management training.
Studying as a student in the BAS program and working as faculty, Knight said PC started to feel like a family where she belonged. Knight said the speaking nomination had to do with knowing a lot of people on campus.
She said doing well and participating in her BAS class probably contributed to the nomination.
Knight said the BAS program is more intense than when she got her AAS degree. Knight said she underwent her first bluebook exam in Underwood's upper economics class where she had to write everything she knew in three hours. Knight said a BAS degree "required a lot more dedication."
When Knight pursued her four year degree, she pulled several overnighters. She said there is an unspoken expectation of it being harder. Knight said it boils down to the students themselves. She said there are two options any student can do: slack or study.
Knight said everything in life contributes to your overall experience. This applies to her life because during her schooling and working at PC she got a hand radio certificate to supplement her interests in emergency management. Knight was also one of the managers for the earthquake preparedness day on October 1, 2008. In addition she is training for her pilot license in June.
"It's been a wonderful experience," saying, "I would do it again," Knight said.
