Four athletes, one representing each sport, have been presented with an Athletic Award during the final board meeting on June 9 at 2 p.m. in the Pirate Union Building conference room. Rick Ross, athletic director stated the awards are given to "athletes who exemplify leadership, athleticism, academics and citizenship." The awards are named after people who made a significant contribution to a particular sport at Peninsula College.
This year's student athlete award winners are: Dion Serras (basketball), Sam Flett (basketball), Marquita Espinoza (softball) and Hugo Vasquez (soccer).
Serras has signed to play for Western Oregon University. "It's a great honor for me to be considered for this award. Working with our team and our coaching staff for the last two years has been one of my greatest experiences," Serras said.
Flett has signed to play for Eastern Oregon University. "It's hard as an athlete to find a balance between school and sports, so I'm just so grateful I found that balance," Flett said.
Espinoza will play her sophomore season at PC. "I'm really honored to get an award like this and I hope to meet everyone's expectations again next year," Espinoza said.
Vasquez is currently playing soccer in Mexico.
The student athletes will receive a plaque and have their names engraved on the perpetual plaque located in the gym.
The basketball award is named after Art Feiro, former Athletic Director and founder of the Northwestern Athletic Association of Community Colleges NWAACC. The Soccer award is named after Wally Sigmar, former college president and NWAACC Hall of Fame member. The softball award is named after Jim Lunt, a longtime director of baseball and softball youth programs, a former PC student body president, a PC Athletic Director and helped bring intercollegiate softball to PC in 2000.
