The biggest roadblock standing in the way of students going back to school is that they cannot afford it. Financial aid is available but do students know how to get it and where to go? Peninsula College is hosting College Goal Sunday, where two $500 scholarships will be available to students who attend.

College Goal Sunday is an opportunity for students, families and the community to come and get help filling out the Free Application for Federal student Aid ,FAFSA, the form that's required for getting financial assistance. "The paperwork can be a bit daunting at first," says Krista Francis, Director of Enrollment Services and Financial Aid.

This event will begin at 2 pm in the science and tech building. Now is the time to apply for the 2010 fall quarter. FA is given on a first come first serve basis and there are limited funds for the 2010/11 school year. It is strongly recommended that FAFSA be submitted to the Federal processor at least two months in advance. The priority deadline is May 14. It is important to have proof of the previous years income tax return and proof of income documents in order when applying.

"We are one of the first states to start this program," say Francis This is the second year PC has participated. Two students who attend and sign up on the Washboard will then be entered to get a $500 scholarship.

Compass testing will be available for students registering for college for the first time. The test starts at 11:30 in room 134 in the M building. This test helps place new students into the appropriate math and English classes. Photo Id, Peninsula College student ID number or social security number, and $15 payment in cash or check is necessary to take the compass test.

The Peninsula College Foundation is the college's foundation that raises money for scholarships for PC students. They will be posting their scholarships along with others from the community online by the end of the winter quarter. One application applies for numerous scholarships. The website for the PC Foundation is www.pcfoundation.ctc.edu.

For students looking further for other scholarship options, there is a free, web based, non-profit scholarship clearinghouse available to Washington students. Students can go to this website and fill out a student profile and it automatically matches you to the scholarships you qualify for. It is then easier for the student to apply for these scholarships right online. This can be found at WASHBOARD.ORG.
