Time is just as much of an investment as money so why waste time taking the same class over again when there are resources available to help students succeed, and they are free. Peninsula College has a free tutoring program available to all students. "Even if you are a good student you can benefit from this program, " Janet Lucas, English Instructor, writing lab coordinator, and e-tutoring coordinator said.

PC has always had free tutoring available, Lucas said but she revamped the program in 2003. Before 2003 a student had to be failing a class and needed permission from an instructor to get tutoring. But now it is open to all students. The subjects available are, math, writing, computer and science. Tutors can be found for all subjects if necessary.

In the early 80's when writing centers were being developed, they used the philosophy that they were making better writers not better writing. "I designed the tutoring program under the same philosophy. It's not about the document or the test it's about making a better more educated student." Lucas said.

Lynn Edgington who has been on both sides of the tutoring coin says she has never had a bad experience. "It's rewarding and fun," she said.

Preety Kaur, who uses the tutoring available says, "I love to come here. I can't return my assignments without coming here. Everyone is so helpful." Lucas said Kaur is currently taking a heavy class load and has seen her grades improve from being tutored.

E-tutoring is an online tutoring service available to students. This has live tutoring available and also an option to submit a writing document and get feedback within 24 hours from a tutor. www.eTutoring.org

Currently PC is not in need of more tutors but there are applications available for those who are interested in tutoring. Most of the tutors writing lab have a bachelor's degree or are part time faculty.

Computer lab hours are Monday through Friday 8am-5pm. Math Lab hours are Monday through Friday 9am-4pm and Wednesday night 5pm-8pm and Saturday afternoons 12-3pm. Tutoring is available in the Long House during the day from 12:30 - 3:30pm.
