On January 12th, a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the country of Haiti. While there is no certainty of the death toll, it's feared to be well over a hundred thousand. The presidential palace in the Capital Port au Prince was left almost in ruins, while many buildings throughout the country were
completely destroyed.
With the destruction of the earthquake leaving the vast majority of Haitians without food, shelter and water, President Barrack Obama has ordered one of the largest relief efforts in our recent history. Along with food and water, many Haitians really need the proper medical attention, which isn't coming fast enough.
The earthquake surely hasn't helped this Third World Country, but it has brought numerous countries together to provide aid for them. Prior to the devastating earthquake the organization USAID has been
lending a hand to Haiti. This program has delivered assistance for things such as short term jobs, building of 29 non-government service providers for health, and improvements in their educational system, to name a few.
Since the earthquake has happened, Haiti is gaining attention from many different countries. Although the support continues to pour into the country, there are far to many people, and not enough
resources coming at a timely speed. So lets help this country in dire need, and continue to send the donations necessary to help them rebuild. Even though cash donations are preferred, any little bit will help.
Make your donations through the Red Cross, USAID, or the joint organization by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
To give locally there are donation jars in the Bookaneer Bookstore and Joy's Bistro, both
located in the PUB.
